Chapter 14

CORAL

We’d spent our last few hours together in a stiff silence. I’d been able to largely ignore the tension within the pack by staying holed up in the bedroom and then eventually finding my way outside as the sun went down, keeping busy by spelling more weapons.

Luckily, much of the water that had clogged up the land around the entrance to the house in the past little while had receded but I still found myself clumsily plodding through what had now become a muddy bank. It wasn’t easy to walk through to get to the weapons stashed around at the other end of the trees that lined the property. Still, it was a walk in the park compared to being inside where I knew I was the main point of tension.

Of all the pack members, the alpha was the one I’d crossed paths with least, yet I’d felt a definite spark of attraction for him from the moment he’d said he’d confer the pack’s protection on me. From the moment I’d laid eyes on him. But what Fabien had said, had been such a slap in the face because it was true. Their pack would never see me as one of them, no matter how dutybound they felt to protect me. My being hunted for an almost non-existent wolf may have been enough for Jacy to want to help keep me from being killed but I would always be a witch to them. One of their oppressors, who was a misfit for herself being oppressed.

I was acutely aware that the Grendels were out there somewhere but I’d managed on my own for so long, I didn’t want to start depending on the males in this pack for protection, proving the other part of what that a-hole Fabien had said. I was learning to recognize the difference between the movement made in my surroundings by animals and those made by others. This had helped me to feel more at ease in times when I wasn’t under attack.

I intermittently directed some of my magic back at my hip which did nothing, making me resign myself to thinking that I’d be branded forever. Or at least until I had enough time to sit down and figure out how to remove brandings. I could really use the power of the full moon, which was thankfully due to rise tonight. I would try again in a few hours when it was in view.

With or without the moon, there had to be a way to get rid of the Grendels’ mark on my body. For the first time in ages, my thoughts followed a cobwebbed path back to my days at the coven where I was sure there were tomes containing this exact knowledge and so much more. If there was a way to brand a body, there had to be a way to remove it.

In the weeks before I’d been made to leave the coven, we had begun learning to brand and from what
